What’s in a round of toast?
In health and care, accurate communication is very important

We like to understand what our clients need and to be able to respond to clients and care team alike when they are faced with a problem.
Listening carefully and reflecting on situations helps us as a team learn about the complexity of communication and how easy it is to misunderstand.
It’s the smallest thing that can spur a discussion here at Sarah’s Carers…

A client I’d known for some time asked me for a round of toast. So, I went into the kitchen and came back with two slices of toast. Which – to me – is round of toast.
When I gave it to him I could see from his face that something wasn’t right.
Me: “You did want two slices didn’t you?”
Him: “No, I only wanted one.”
Me: “But you asked for a round of toast.”
Him: “Yes. That’s one slice.”
Me *pauses*: “Really? I’m sure it’s two…”
We agreed to disagree… but I was curious. Back in the office I quizzed the team.
What does a round of toast mean to you – one slice or two?
You know what: a 50:50 split in the office.
Just goes to show, even when you think you know what someone means, their definition might be different from yours. Which is why you have to really pay attention to those you are caring for.

My client didn’t say there was anything wrong, but his face gave it away. And I know from experience that many of our clients won’t say anything’s wrong. And if you ask them if they need any more help they’ll always say ‘no’. Which is why we look for the little things, the small clues that tell us that everything might not be OK.

Good communication is more than just words. And, just to say, my client ate both slices anyway. 🙂
