As you may know, we often help with household chores, like feeding pets, loading the dishwasher and cleaning. And, quite often, the requests we get from our clients and their relatives are to do with how we operate things within their homes. Anyone who’s had a well-meaning family member help put the crockery away during a visit will understand the frustration of not being able to find the mugs once they’ve gone home!

However, on this occasion, we had a call from a client’s daughter-in-law. Apparently, one of our carers had shrunk a pair of our client’s trousers. Well this is very serious. Trying to get to the bottom of this, the daughter-in-law told me: “They’re overloading the washing machine.”

At that moment I had a bit of an epiphany. Because, at home, I’m always asking my daughter: ‘how much have you put in there?’.

And it occurred to me, we had never taught our carers how to load a washing machine. But if daughters own poor efforts were anything to go by, then yes – some of them probably were overloading the machine.

Not any more.

Today, all our carers are shown how to load a washing machine as part of their induction training.

By the way, I bought our client two pairs of trousers to make up for the shrunken pair. And I never have to nag my daughter… well, not about the washing anyway.
